January 10, 20267 min read

Why We Love Pataskala

Pataskala holds a special place in my heart—it’s where I have lived the last 18 years, where I’ve watched my grandkids play soccer on the weekends, and where I can still grab a cone from the Dairy Hut with the older grandkids who aren’t "too cool" yet. Whether we’re having a family dinner at the Nutcracker Diner or heading to a sports field on a Saturday morning, life here is grounded in comfort, convenience, and community.

With easy access to highways like I-70, 670, and 270, commuting is a breeze. We're 25 minutes from the airport, close to major shopping hubs, and surrounded by natural beauty. The newly expanded Pataskala Public Library, Audubon Metro Park near downtown Columbus, Inniswood Metro Gardens in Westerville, and Dillon State Park are all within reach.

What Makes Pataskala Desirable?

Pataskala offers the perfect blend of small-town charm and smart growth. Residents love the balance of peaceful living and easy access to Columbus. With strong public services, affordable home options (compared to more urban areas), and a welcoming community, it’s a top choice for families, retirees, and remote workers alike.

Whether it's grabbing groceries at Kroger on Broad Street, visiting the seasonal farmers market, or relying on dependable local businesses like Chet's Auto Repair, Pataskala continues to prove why it's one of the best-kept secrets in Central Ohio.

Pataskala Market Trends (End of 2025)

The Pataskala housing market is still in a seller’s market. Here's a snapshot from the Columbus Board of Realtors comparing December 2025 to December 2024:

·Absorption Rate: 2.33 months of inventory (up 14.78% YoY), showing steady buyer activity

·Average List Price: $536,124 (up 8.91%)

·Median List Price: $419,900 (up 1.18%)

·Average Sale Price: $475,178 (up 20.76%)

·Median Sale Price: $419,000 (up 8.83%)

·Average CDOM (Days on Market): 54 (up 54.29%)

·Median CDOM: 29 (up 52.63%)

Buyers are paying more, but homes are sitting slightly longer than they were a year ago, giving a bit more breathing room for well-prepared buyers.

A Brief History of Pataskala

I love history. I love walking through old downtowns, imagining what life was like centuries ago, and flipping through old photographs that tell the stories of how a town grew up. That’s why I think it’s important to include a glimpse into Pataskala's past—because understanding where we came from helps us appreciate where we are now.

Pataskala’s story begins long before the conveniences and community events we enjoy today. The area that became Pataskala was first settled in the early 1800s, when pioneers like David Heron made their homes here as early as 1805, drawn by fertile land and access to waterways. But it was Richard and Sarah Conine — originally from New Jersey — who are often credited with laying the foundation for what would become Pataskala. After purchasing over 2,000 acres in Lima Township in 1821, Richard established a grist mill near the South Fork of the Licking River, and the locale soon became a resting point for travelers and settlers moving between Columbus and Newark. When the railroad was extended through the area in 1851, it sparked growth and the community began to take its modern shape. Conine platted a village called “Conine Town,” but by 1852 the name was changed to “Pataskala,” a word drawn from the Delaware/Native language and often interpreted as referencing the river waters that flowed nearby. A post office was established that same year, anchoring Pataskala as a recognized stop on maps and mail routes.

As Pataskala grew in the latter half of the 19th century, it developed institutions and landmarks that remain part of its heritage. Some of the oldest significant buildings — including the Pataskala Jail (built in 1892), Pataskala Presbyterian Church (built in 1868), and Pataskala United Methodist Church (completed in 1897) — are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, showcasing the town’s architectural roots and community priorities in faith, law, and public life.

For decades Pataskala remained a friendly, small-scale community centered around local farms, churches, schools, and family life. A major turning point came in 1996, when the village of Pataskala merged with Lima Township — vastly expanding geographic area and population, and transitioning the area into an incorporated city with broader services and growth potential. Since then, Pataskala has balanced its agricultural and historic roots with thoughtful development, welcoming new residents who appreciate both its heritage and its future potential. Today, Pataskala continues to celebrate its past through community events, historical preservation efforts, and the many stories passed down through generations that tie today’s housing market and quality of life to its deep roots in Central Ohio.
